Let's Go Fishing!

Today was a beautiful Day! Jim, a family friend, invited us to go out fishing. It took about 2 seconds to say YES!

We, I mean Frank & Jim, set a skate for Halibut. A skate is like a set line with about 30 hooks on it. Frank pulled up a ray, I had never seen one out of the water before. The kids were so excited! Grace wanted to let it go back into the ocean so he could be with his friends. Cort wanted to bring it home and keep it. Well, Grace got her way and the ray is now back in the deep blue sea.

Frank and Jim also pulled up a little shark, and a starfish. The shark was just little, Cort was disappointed. He wanted the shark to be bigger. The starfish got shook off of the hook before frank pulled in the boat. Poor guy.

After we got back to the harbor Jim's son had just in from fishing too. Jim's son got an octopus on one of his set lines. The kids were fascinated with it. They were not sure about touching it, without a stick. It was a great day to be out on the water! Thank you Jim!

Shrimping

Yesterday Dad and Frank went out shrimping.  The boys set out the shrimp pots on Friday and let them soak till Monday night.  There pot was not empty, but not really full either.

Poor Frank, he got the job of pulling the pot onto the boat.  He did not mind, he just loves to be out on the water!
The shrimp in the white tub have lost their heads.  The Shrimp that are right outside of the tub are waiting a headless fate from Frank and Dad.  The two funny looking things off to the right were also in the pot.  I am not sure what they are?  They are strange, the back end of the critters are like a lobster tail.  Then they have those long funny things for front legs?  You can find some really strange things in the ocean.

The Boys and The Crabs

Saturday morning Frank and Dad went out looking for some crabs with a friend. As you can see by the two stacked pots they were successful!

Grandpa showing off one of the crabs.  Cort and Grace were loving playing with the crabs.  They were even trying to save the new pets from the fate they were about to experience.

Dad and Frank found that the best way to take care of the crabs was with the hatched on the tummy and then take some clippers and cut the shell off.  They then took the guts out of the crabs and then dropped the crabs into boiling salt water for 7 min.

Cort had a hard time with the whole idea of killing those crabs that he wanted to save.  We tried to get him to go into the house so that he would not see the killing.  He would not stay inside, so he was crying a lot.  He understands that they are food and that it is a part of life, but he is NOT happy about it.

Grandpa Is Here!

Grace is loving having Grandpa here. This picture was taken on the Ferry to Metlakatla on Thursday. Things have been busy I will post again soon!

On Dad's way down on the Ferry he got the chance to see a lot of whales. This was his best picture of the whale tail.

Boys Will Be Boys

Yesterday Cort found a worm, snail & a slug in the front yard. He was so excited! He got a big plastic container, he filled it with dirt and rain water. These are the happiest bugs on the island!

Here is a close up of the new friends.

In this picture you can see the missing tooth in Cort's mouth. He lost that tooth Sunday morning while he was eating his coco puffs. He actually swallowed the tooth, just like a puppy.

Grace got to Dad

Frank started working a long stretch of night shifts. He fell asleep on the couch the other day, I went and got a blanket for him and covered him up. When I went back into the living room about 5 min. later Grace also had to take care of Dad. She must have thought he needed company so she tucked her Care Bear in with her Daddy. It was so sweet!

Grace's First Day

Today was Grace's 1st day of Head Start.

She was talking all weekend about how she was going to ride the bus by herself and make lots of new friends. Well, she tried but I rode in the front of the bus. She assured me that tomorrow she will go all by herself. We will see:)

She had a lot of fun and is ready to go again in the morning.

A Day Without Rain!

We finally had a day without rain, so we went to the beach. Frank had fish on the brain, Cort was on a crab mission, Grace was looking for shells, I was just glad to be out of the house! It is always so nice to get out and find things on the beach. We found about 5o dead jelly fishes up on the beach. Then on our way back to the truck, we heard something in a culvert that went under the road. When we went to check it out, it was a humpy (salmon) trying to swim up the culvert. It was really neat!
